I think that the way Jenna and Hayden met is most often (briefly) described as “they met in dental school”... I find this, however, to be a grand oversimplification and severely inadequate platitude of the beginnings of their relationship. Although true, it leaves out the day-to-day interactions and the minutiae that Jenna and Hayden shared in the years leading up to them dating. The real stuff. It doesn’t capture how Hayden would watch Jenna walk into class their first year of dental school with her Starbucks every morning. How he would watch her flip between dental school powerpoints and online shopping seamlessly from just one row behind her. Simply stating that “they met in dental school” leaves out how Hayden’s dental school apartment (commonly referred to as “the Claridge”) was always the site of every dental school party, and how although most invites were sent in group chats or spread through the halls of the dental school, Jenna always seemed to receive a personal invite from Hayden, all throughout their first three years of dental school.

“They met in dental school” fails to encompass the nerves they felt before they went on their first “date”, originally planned as a study date for their dental board exams for a couple hours, yet which turned into a 10 hour escapade around downtown Detroit filled with pizza (Hayden made Jenna give a score from 1-10), red wine, and a discovery of the spark between the two of them. “They met in dental school” fails to mention that their first kiss was shared the night before Hayden’s dental board exam, and his lack of focus on one of the most important days of his life, all because of a girl who turned out to be a heck of a lot more important than any test could ever be.
